Frequently Asked Questions
What is American Mahjong?
American Mahjong (or Mah Jongg) is a variation on the traditional Chinese game, brought to the US by Joseph Babcock when he started importing tiles from Shanghai. After many different versions spread around the US in the 1920s, the National Mah Jongg League (NMJL) standardized the game in 1935 and they publish the cards used to play to this day.
How do you play?
The goal of mahjong is to make a specific pattern, or line, using 14 tiles. NMJL publishes new cards every year with new lines, making it a fun challenge to get used to the new patterns. Traditionally played with four players, there are variations that allow you to play with two or three players if you’ve got a smaller group.
Where and when do you teach?
I specialize in Boston and Brookline, but I can travel all over the Metro Boston area. (though if you’re within a few miles of me, you’ll get mahjong delivered by bicycle!)
I can come to your home, place of business, or recommend a location based on where your group is located.
As far as to when - I get that you’re busy and your schedules are hard to coordinate. So instead of having firm dates/times, we’ll work together to find times that work for you. Prefer 7 pm on a Tuesday? Great! Saturday brunch and Bams? You got it!
What do I need to get started?
All you need is a group and an NMJL card - you can order them here. (Don’t try to grab one on Amazon - they’re knock offs and you’ll end up with invalid lines). I have back-up cards, but you’ll want your own to practice. I’ll bring the mat, racks, tiles, and dice. And once you’re hooked, I can recommend tile sets for any vibe, whether you’re looking for something traditional, modern, preppy, whimsical - you name it, I know a place for it.
I’m hooked! How can I practice?
There’s lots of options for online Mahjong, but my personal favorite is I Love Mahj - it lets you play with bots, strangers, or your friends.
